Jij Wint

by The Day

/

about

The Day are Laura Loeters from Netherlands and Gregor Sonnenberg from Germany. Since meeting at ArtEZ School of Music in Arnhem the two keep reconciling distances, differences and always new approaches and perspectives. What runs like a thread through all of this is the interest to take charge of things themselves, try out and grow on it together.

While working on new material, the two allow themselves to continue their series of tasteful cover versions. Following their works for label mates Yeah But No and Dakota, and lately The Lemonheads / Smudge, they come up now with a touching version of Spinvis' "Jij Wint".

Singer / bassist Laura Loeters on how The Day picked "Jij Wint":

"I discovered Spinvis back in 2011 when he released his album “tot ziens, Justine Keller”. I knew that at that time he was already a well known artist in the Netherlands, but he really got me with this particular record. I fell in love. His fragile, but then again so powerful voice, singing about everyday life, road trips and nostalgia in an really visual way made me feel so connected to the music right away."

She goes on: "Especially the enigmatic song “jij wint” intrigued me. Because of its not so common chord progressions and the beautiful well chosen piano, harpsichord and string harmonies, it almost feels like a classical song. Spinvis’ soft and clear voice makes it even more touching. Gregor and I immediately felt a strong desire to see if we were able to make it into something of our own. This was not an easy task, but it was definitely worth it and we are very happy with our interpretation of this masterpiece.“

The Day is where whimsical Dream Pop meets a DIY ethos learned from hardcore. A sparse, springy and rapturous dynamic alternates with a wildly imaginative dream-pop harmony, rock and synths create just as inspiring contrasts as night-cool, reduced post-punk references. This is continued in the songs by themes that connect and contrast the private and the political as often as possible. The Day's music expresses utopia as well as melancholy in its escapism. After all, The Day is an international long-distance constellation, an almost celebratory pan-European idea of unification (which sadly can't be emphasized too often in recent months).

The Day have recorded two EPs by themselves, and released their debut album "Midnight Parade" in 2019. The band was constantly on the road, supported Kate Tempest live and shared stages with Turnover. And quite incidentally, the two continue to work on formulating their own version of withdrawn, melancholy pop music. The Day is intimate without being intruding and speaks with an inner calmness.
