Empty

about

Antwerp and Hamburg-based dream-pop duo THE DAY will release their new single "Empty" on August 20, 2021. Following a series of tasteful cover versions, the driving Indie/Alternative track marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band, that will result in a new album in 2022.

Contrasting the euphoric upbeat mood of the music, the lyrics of "Empty" are an expression of disillusionment and exhaustion. They shed light on the feeling that important discussions and social currents always end up drowning in the general noise, failing because of gatekeepers. In the face of climate crisis, social injustice or the pandemic, so many wrong decisions are made, and it seems so predictable.

It seems even progressive voices have to follow an absurd logic of exploitation. Why are racists again and again invited to a discussion about racism in our society? Why are voices, that deny climate catastrophe, given such a disproportionate amount of space in the name of balance while the world is literally burning? Why do the concerns of a few hundred people with dangerous views and dangerous flags have to be taken serious every week, but not those of several million young people who want to take charge of the future? We are thrown back to the same points over and over again and make no progress.

On the motivation for "Empty," The Day elaborate:

"There's so much that needs to be done. So much that needs to change for this world. And then we always come up against limits and glass ceilings. Just one example: The incredible number of young activists of Fridays For Future are denied relevance and competence, because of their age, or because of the most bizarre accusations. Important and large protests are trivialized until they no longer seem to carry any weight. We need to do much more. We need to listen much more to the youth, to the new generation!"

Over the past year, The Day not only had to deal with various lockdowns. On top, closed borders and different national regulations stood in the way of their collaborative band. For a pan-European project like The Day, there is simply no common day-to-day life during the pandemic, no basis for working together in the same place. With the current relaxations, a band like The Day is now possible again. They now have a new hopeful starting point.

After two DIY EPs and their debut album "Midnight Parade" released in early 2019, THE DAY continue to work on formulating their own version of pop music. A music that is intimate without being intruding. Withdrawn, melancholic and always speaking with an inner calmness.
